On icy conditions nothing beats a real studded winter tire, and Nokians are the ones I trust.
I have Hakkapeliitta 5's in size of 225/50 R17. I can't say anything bad about my Nokians. Two winters down and and lots of tread still to wear on them.

Hakkapeliitta 7 is brand new model from Nokian and I bet it's yet better than 5's. These two tires are always studded, but there are other Nokian models available as non-studded.

My friend said they're crap. Hmm... they kept recommending blizzaks but I wanna hear words from actual owners of these tires.

My Dunlop 3D's are awesome in the snow and held up very well after one season, tread-wise. They do ride a bit harsh, though.

I think the harsher ride of the wintersport 3D's is because they are more of a performance winter tire. I currently have the pirelli wintersport 210's and they are crap compared to the dunlop wintersport 3D's that I had.

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 Xls, used them on my former 645 and now on my M6, they are a performace winter snow tire and work great

I have used Dunlop WinterSport M3s (the immediate predecessor to the D3s) for about the last 6 winters. They have their pros and cons and they suit my needs perfectly.

The Dunlops are a winter performance tire. This means that their dry weather grip is quite tenacious for a winter tire. They also have a long tread life and they are firm riding and responsive. This is the perfect winter tire if you live in an area where it only snows occassionally in the winter (such as the greater NYC area). But the tire is not a hard core, ultimate snow tire. Their grip and traction is adequate in the snow but not outstanding. I wouild not have them if I lived in a hard core, snowy winter climate (like Vermont or New Hampshire for example). There are studless winter tires that have mre snow grip than the Dunlops, such as the Blizzaks. But the Blizzaks have poorer dry weather performance than the Dunlops.

Bottom line is that winter tires are a tradeoff. The greater the snow performance, the greater the noise and the less the dry weather performance and grip.
