Dear e60 Forum:

Which are the best tires and the best prices for 255-40-19?

1) Continental

2) TOYO Proxies T1-R

3) Dunlop

4) Goodyear

These tires are being bought and are going on the new BMW OEM 166M M 5 rim

Also has anyone ever heard of any problems putting this size tire on a 2004 e60?
Thanks in Advance.

Not sure about best prices Eddie, but that is the wrong tyres size for a non M5. You speed will be 5-10mph out at 80mph. On a non M5 you need 245//19 all round or 245/35/19 front and 275/30/19 rear.

Thanks 'm-style' for your quick response, and I noticed that my tire seller at TireRack .com they listed the 245 for the 5 series too using a 19inch, but when I told my BMW dealer I need 245's, then he advises me to use the 255's, but offers no reason why not use the 255's, other than that is what the 166m BMW OEM service manual calls for, and you want to stay with their specs on this.

Now concerning tire rotation on directional staggered sets..I am told by my Master BMW Mechanic Jeff, I can even rotate directional staggered sets by cross rotation method, of dismount and mount my tire each time, (That does sound do able to me and very tempting to buy the staggered set, but I'm scared some idiot at Firestone where I have lifetime balance and rotation might be having a bad day will scratch my BMW OEM M5 rim, and I would HATE to raise Cain if they did, but I would, but I am thinking is it worth all this for staggered Vs non staggered where is only get mounted one time!)

Anyway sorry for rambling, but time is close, and can you advise why the difference in tire size M5 Vs Non M5 so I can educate your size findings to my BMW Dealer? (You, some others, and even Tire Rack says 245)

Thanks in advance.

I put 19" on my e60 545 and got the right tire height to make sure the speedo was still accurate. I went with toyo T1R tires and they grip really really well. I take a large rotary near my place at 75-80 mph easily without any slipping. I can't remember the tire sizes off hand, but I can get them for you if interested.

Thanks and are your sizes: 245-40-19? (Because the 166M's are calling for 255-40-19 and some people here are using the 245's instead, and if I go that route I will use the 245's as well)

The right size should be 245-35-19 not 245-40-19!

Look's like you must insist that your dealer/SA read our forum because he/she apparently falls short in the knowledge dept about e60's. The EOM recommended tire size for 19" eom 166s on a regular e60 is 245/35/19 front or 275/30/19 rear or go slightly outside recommended with 285/30/19 like Lomag to better fill the tire well. Yes, tirerack even got that one right Re: the 285 discussion and speedo issue, I've linked to the thread in which this is discussed. In terms of tires for 166s, many of us got the Michelin PS2 but some others got Goodyear Eagles or Continental Contisports. Linked is a thread regarding reviews (tirerack, Car and Driver etc) on the top non-RF performance tires and all the tires I mentioned are in the top four. I think the 166s look better on a regular e60 than the M5 because I think the set-up sits up high on the M5 with a gap. Some M5 owners like our own wolverine has change the spring set-up so its sits lower.
