I think the question is, what is the point of having the type number at the back?
Never thought about that one....

As shallow as this sounds.. i'll go ahead and say it...

it's a less tacky way to keep the price tag on your car w/o having the window sticker still there blocking the side view.... lolz..hahahahaha

Or looking at it another way...

What's the point of not having the type number on the back?

My Ride: BMW 545iA Black Sapphire
Model Year: 2005
Engine: 545i

The way I see it : all cars are recognizable, right ? Apart from the immediate
give-away of the the design all cars have a badge...BMW the propeller, Merc the
star, Audi the rings...Volvo haven't, they have to write the thing ( ) , anyway> people see that as a first reference, this is the point where the statement
has been already made. The model insignia comes next, for someone who wants to
know the motor variation for whatever reason. To admire the technological jewel
these engines are or to figure out your bank balance - is
beyond us, for us we shouldn't care...

Everyone of us who drives anything from a 520i to 545i ( or soon an M5 ) shares
the dream of the E60...and thats what most other people think about sitting behind one of our cars. And thats nice because they admire something beautiful and
well engineered. I will always fully support badged or debadged owners with
the same respect.

Thanks

PS. Any BMW posers are excused and may now return to the "other" more suitable
forum...
