I remember seeing something about it, but did a few searches and cannot find anything for some reason. The title says it all, but to reiterate, I wanna know if there's a way to rewire the headlight to make the AEs work as the DRLs. Obviously, this is pertaining only to pre-LCI cars, since LCIs have an iDrive switch for the DRLs.

do u have existing DRL? Only works if ur DRL is not disabled. If so, u can take out the stupid H7 halogen bulb, put in a resistor into the plugs instead of the bulb to trick our car. Then also wire up some relays so it will power the AEs using the battery. I wouldnt recommend it. Pretty sure there's a simpler way but that's the only thing I can think of for now.

In other words, might be better to just get the dealer to update the S/W?

Hold on, I thought that when you do the s/w update at the dealer (which I have not done, yet), you will have the option to enable/disable the DRLs through iDrive - am I correct? Or is it that the dealer simply disables the DRLs and rips you off for the 145 bucks?

This sucks! I thought that updating the iDrive s/w lets you turn the DRL on and off through the iDrive menu, like on the newer cars

Where can you get resistors?
Right now, my H7s are unplugged, and the iDrive error is starting to annoy me.

Try 10 watt 10 ohms and then if that doesnt work, try 10 watt 50 ohms. I am not too sure which one is needed. I forgot my electrical stuff from college. Go to radio shack and get a wireloom resistor.
