I need my alternator replaced on my 2004 545i 4.4 Liter. Apparently it's overcharging my battery. The dealer also said I need a "Smart Switch" replaced. The way they explained that part, it sounds like a voltage regulator. Anyway, they wanted $1200(usd) to do the work. I think the alternator alone was $650 for parts. I shopped around, found a guy who worked at BMW for 8 years and is now working out of his own shop, he said he would do the labor for me for $200. I just need to find the parts. Since he just stopped working at the dealer, and all they used were BMW parts, he can't really recommend anyplace to look for aftermarket parts.

Do any of you have suggestions? I really don't want to spend $650 on a new alternator direct from BMW. Also, is there any reason I should be concerned about using aftermarket parts on a 04 BMW? It doesn't seem necessary to put a brand new alternator on a 5 year old car. Am I wrong? Also, for the sake of time, can I buy the part from a local store like Autozone or is that a No No?

Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Nate

For critical replacement parts I recommend Original BMW Parts - new or re-manufactured. Buy through one of the Forum partners who offer big discounts on BMW replacement parts.

Who is that forum partner that offers these big discounts? That would help.

An alternative for your alternator is to tell your local dealer parts manager that other dealers offer a 25% DISCOUNT on original parts and give them an opportunity to price match. They won't lose their shirts on your business.

How about getting your alternator rebuild by local reputable alternator shop?

Try Napa Auto Parts, they have a good network of re-manufactured parts.

Well at least for the Japanese vehicles, I used them a lot.
I am not sure whether they have good selection for Euro vehicle.

Last time I helped a friend replacing Alternator on C230, Napa and Oreilly could order them.

I don't think it's worth it to get BRAND NEW alternator while you could get remanufactur one for a lot cheaper w/ life time warranty.

Please keep us updated on where you found a good replacement.
It may be my 545 in the future

My 04 545i is currently getting the alternator changed at the dealership, and I only have 51k miles, so yes, the alternators do go out in 4-5 years.. unfortunately.

And good god.. 1200? Glad I still have CPO and only paying a $50 deductible..
