I was looking to buy a replacement air filter from K &N to put in my 2009 535 xdrive.

Has anyone had any issues with this filter in their car? There have been some stories about it causing problems in Mercedes and Volvo.

Let me know what your experience has been good or bad.

Thanks!

Shouldn't be any problem with a drop-in. I switched to a BMS open air filter (similar in build to a K&N) and haven't looked back.

Is the "open air" setup also referred to as the dual cone? Im looking into intake and air filter mods. Just curious to hear reviews etc. Thanks.

Yes - BMS offers the dual cone as well as the single cylinder-type filter that feeds into both intake runners. Both give you the same increases as per their website.

You will definitely hear the turbos wind up after installing it.

If they make one for 545i, it's the same part # as 550i.
Instead buy my slight used KNN Shameless plug

Got the K&N in my 530i manual. Works like a charm. No problems since installation (~6 months)

I've had my K&N for a few years. I wash n oil it every 20k miles or so. I clean the MAF every 10k or so to prevent any possible fouling of the sensor from the filter oil. Not much else needs to be done.

I switch my filter out for a k&n drop-in and haven't seen any issues. You don't have to worry about the maf issue since the N54 engines don't have a maf to foul up.

I have a K&N in all 4 BMW's right now. Never had an issue. But do take a shop towel to it and try to get off excess oil before putting in and do not over oil when recharging. Recharge about every 25K mi or so. Clean the MAFS while you're at it just in case.
