Warranty is not an issue with the VFE S/C, at least not in Socal. There are Socal BMW dealership installing the VFE S/C into cars i.e. e46 M3s. In LA there are at least 4 dealerships who will not void the warranty b/c of the VFE S/C.

Does BMW know it ?
I think not ...

Yes, you're right. If the VFE S/C did indeed cause the failure of an OEM part it is within the dealership to void the warranty. But, just having the S/C itself will not void the warranty. I'm sure part of the reason why VFE is taking so long to release the S/C is to ensure that it does not cause a OEM part to fail by doing rigorous testing.

With a such upgrade you would definitely need to upgrade to the bigger brakes and probably wheels( to accommodate bigger brakes) plus tires. Add a body kit and you are in M5 territory( warranty included). Why bother?
nice argument, and could agree but one factor you missed...

Your point is correct only if now you haven't a 545i and you have to buy an E60 and you must to decide if take a 550i or M5 ... But if you already have a 545i/550i ...

Secondo thing : 545i/550i supercharged is faster than M5, that has less torque and more Kg .
(in fact the Alpina B5 is faster than M5)

In case I haven't already mentioned it, VFE is coming out with S/C for 530i model as well.
Any chance for a 07 525i (3.0L engine)?
Do you know roughly how much HP/torque can be gain for a 525i/530i engine?
Thanks!

That's an interesting consideration. By the time I add bigger brakes & wheels, stiffer suspension bits, and the SC, I would be about $20,000 into the mods. For about that money (maybe a few thousand more), I could trade in my 550 for comparably used M5.

However, with the SC mods etc..., I would have a car faster than an M5, and without it's idosyncracies. But I would never get anywhere near that money back when I sold the car.

Buying an M5 might be the smarter financial move - you would certainly get much more of your money back out of it - but since when are we ever rational when it comes to our cars?

Hmmm, ain't it great to have such choices?

I don't know about the SC making our cars faster than the M5. Isn't that just speculation?

Actually, I guess if you're talking about the SC for the 550....maybe??

But Alex123 does have a point, after SC and brakes, I might as well upgrade to a used M5. Here's my train of thought:

Benefits of supercharging my 545:
1) Stealth bomber. I'd love to blow the doors off cars like the 300C SRT-8, Cadillac V-cars, perhaps the new S6...etc... and see the looks on their faces.
2) Individuality. Not many people out there would have a SC 545.
3) I've done so much to my car already, hard to let it all go. sniff, sniff.....

Benefits of upgrading to an M5:
1) No warranty issues.
2) Prestige. I often feel in awe when I see an M car and I figured others would feel the same looking at mine....
3) Reliability of a factory car. Not having to worry about the potential for engine longevity issues with a supercharged car.
4) All the prestige and heritage and motorsport history that are embodied in the //M logo. Being part of a cult phenomenon that words just can't describe.

Hmm.......and the psychological battle goes on. haha

eurocarfan and alex123 have some good points. but i still think getting a s/c on my 550i is still a bargain. i haven't seen an m5 for less than 88,000. plus taxes, gas guzzler tax(3700) and license i'm looking at 100,000. plus any mods i'd make. if i was aiming that high i would have bought a maserati Quattroporte. something i did consider.

i think that i'd end up quite a bit below 100k for total build. i'll definately have a car great german built car with the all the mods and customization that will make it mine.

The Maser is a sweet car but at 400hp, it's quickly getting left behind in the horsepower race. Although it seems to be holding it's own in comparison tests against cars like the M5 and E55.

I understand the math that's why I'm just looking at used M5s.
