Default Aftermarket cd/dvd

Is it possible to bypass the oem cd/dvd and use a aftermarket double din unit in?

Not easily and probably cost prohibitive. The radio is tied in to your CCC (onboard computer) and it would have to be coded to recognize it.

If you're willing to dish out some real cash (400-500 bucks) then I would consider buying a Seicane Android head unit. It is 100% plug and play and looks really nice. A friend of mine has recently bought one and has been bugging me to buy one ever since.
Here's a YT video that may help you understand a bit more. The video shows an e90 but don't worry the e60 and e90 HU are identical. Also, they just came out with a new model which has Android 9.0, 4gb of RAM and 64 gb of built in storage so it should be really fast.

Mixed reviews on the Seicane Android head unit if you do a Google search.

I've been looking to buy this HU for a while now and all the bad reviews I could find were for e39 and e46 units. Their main issue were buttons would stop working but with the e60, there are no buttons in the head unit itself so I wouldn't be all that concerned about it. Again this is just my opinion.

I also have been looking at the new product. I want it but when I priced it out there are options that make this more than what I'm willing to spend. I just want Apple CarPlay and maybe the rear camera. I looks like you can't use the system mic also.

I think there already is an Apple Car Play dongle that you can buy and just plug into you stock head unit. I can't remember what brand it is or what it costs but I'll look it up for you.
