arrg I am so sick of reading these. Do you think a plastic stock intake keeps out the heat just because it looks enclosed? Or do you think a carbon fibre or steel/metal enclosed keeps out 300 degrees of heat?
The AFE are all built like that and designed to "seal" and close when the hood closes-they are all open in design and the top closes when the hood closes. The rest of the box is a pretty decent heatshield but of course stock or intake box gets hot after heavy use. It is the bigger cone intake and piping that flows air better is where the gains are made. Maybe a bit of heat is kept out with the shield but air is gonna be hot either way in an engine box.
AFE intakes actually have some good dyno data ocmpared to others and produce 6-10whp depending on car which is pretty decent.
Better is the sound personally they are great sounding and why someone would put in an intake

I had my 530 on the track for the first time today. When I come in from a session I aways open the hood to let the engine cool down. I was amazed at how cool it was around the air cleaner on this car -- it hardly even felt warm touching the cover. So, I wouldn't worry about underhood temps heating up the air too much in that part of the engine compartment. If over a half hour of really hard track driving doesn't heat it up, there is not too much to worry about.
