My Ride: 550i/ black with aurburn/ sport/ SMG/ m aero kit/ premimum sound/ cold weather/ heated rear/ navigation/20" iforged sprints in gunmetal with PS2's _GONE

I just found this forum. It is really informative. I placed my order for a '07 550I I have to wait till next month. DAMN I hate waiting! The vehicle has the sport package and M aero kit. I'm looking to upgrade the wheels, but I can't decide on 19s or 20s. I know the M5 comes with 19s so I had initially considered going with the 19s. I don't want to sacrifice the ride severely. Also I live the great pothole land of NYC. However the look of the 20's are unbeatable. I don't want to change the springs on the car. I want to order wheels soon so that I have them when the car arrives. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Welcome! Great choice of car.

IMHO, the only 19"s worth getting are OEM M5 166 or M6 167. Other than that, go with 20"s. The e60 looks sharp with 20"s. With the Sport Package and 20"s you won't need lowering springs.

I had a chance to checkout hollywoodtrash's 550 Sport with 20" Radenergie up close. It looks great. Very little wheel gap. There will be a lot of other folks chiming in with their recommendations for 20"s.

BTW, the 19" or 20" will be a better ride than the 18" with RFTs.

I would not go bigger than 19. And, despite what jiio says , check out my 101's in my sig and what's below. I think you give up too much with 20's--acceleration, ride, handling, and potholeability. BMW doesn't recommend anything above 19 for a reason or ten.

Haha...

I forgot about your 101's Znod. Yeah, they're good and lightweight. Also, since Znod reminded me about the 101s there are also 172s, 135s, and 128s. All OEM.

I have 20" Asanti's and have been surprised at how good the ride quality is - thought it would be worse. Of course, I am definitely careful over bumps, but general driving is surprisingly great.

I pondered long over this exact question...in the end I went 19" and I also went OEM. In doing so I personally felt that I had made a safe upgrade. No vibrations from aftermarket wheels, no need for spiggot rings etc..

19"

hello,

i was at the same decission a while ago.
finally i bought original bmw m5 style 166 wheels, 19".

i can tell you that upgrading to bigger wheels costs max. speed and especially acceleration.

my winter wheels are 17" oz superleggera, the car is feelable fast with them.

the bmw m5 or m6 wheels are pretty light weight for 19", if you are just interested in improving the looks of your car, you can take oem wheels as well and forget about what i wrote.

this is how it looks like..

btw, why mounting cheap oem copies on a 50k$++ car? i do not understand that

Why does a bigger wheel rob you of acceleration?

Good question. As long as the wheel diameter is kept the same and in some cases there is even a weight decresse i don't get it. But for sure with 20s the weight increases a bit even if the rims are forged and also the diameter and all the measurments get distorted since you'd have to go 25% at the back and probably 30% on the front and there are few memebers with those setups. In that case if the roads where you live aren't PERFECT then imo it's just money thrown out the window.
