Thumbs up

Well today the body shop installed my ACS style rear spoiler that I bought from theXman. The results are mixed. I love the look of the spoiler and the paint job was excellent.

Now for the problem: there is a gap between my trunk and the top edge of the spoiler and you can see the white double stick tape poking through it. Basically, the spoiler looks great from the back review but not from the front or side, where the white 3M double stick tape is visible through the gap. The problem is most evident in the third picture from the bottom.

I am not sure exactly what to do. The body shop guy claims that the fitment of the spoiler is good but not perfect and that a small gap is unavoidable.

The body shop guy advised against removing the spoiler and trying again with black (rather than white) double stick 3M tape, claiming that it would be very difficult to cleanly remove the tape from the spoiler. He also rejected using paint to paint the white tape carbon black to match my car, claiming that the paint would destroy the tape. He also did not think that putting dark colored expoy to fill the gap would work, explaining that it would look messy and that it would make the spoiler's removal when I return the car from lease more difficult as it could damage the paint.

Basically, the body shop guy stated that with time, the white tape would recede , shrink and become dirty and that, as a result, it would become less visible. I am wondering if I shouldn't have gotten an OEM M5 spoiler instead.

Any ideas about how to fix?

Yes I am inclined to give it a few weeks and see if the tape recedes. If it doesn't, it may be bye bye for the spoiler.

I dunno what to say. I agreed that the white tape and the gap are very visible. Obviously, they removed my double-sided tape (gray color) and put on the white one. If I had installed it to my car, I don't believe the gap would be that much. I had trial-fitted the spoiler to my car a few times for measurement. The fitment should be closed (if not perfect) which I had shown you the other day. I'd question if the body shop know or use the best technique to install it. Sorry Scott for the mixed results.

Thanks but the white tape in the gap is pretty prominent and unsightly. So if there is no solution to fixing it, the spoiler may have a very short life expectancy on my car.

Scott, unlike your hairline, the tape will not recede. Seriously though, the tape was placed incorrectly on the spoiler. There is a recessed area on the underside of the spoiler, tape should be placed there only, not on the raised under section. You're spoiler needs to be removed and reinstalled properly and it will look just fine.

The mixed result is not your fault. The spoiler was in perfect condition when I bought it off of you. I think I may need to take it to a different place for a re-install. I just don't know where to go (suggestions are welcome). One thing I cannot do with a leased car is screw it on.
