I have a 550i Sport so I walk in your shoes.

What is your goal with the winter set? Do you want: (1) maximum snow traction (such as if you live in a snow-laden climate); or (2) acceptable (but not max) snow traction coupled with superior dry weather performance and grip.

I wanted the later as I live in NYC so I run on the Dunlop WinterSport M3s on OEM Style 123 wheels (18 inches). You definitely want 17s or 18s and not 19s for greater pothole protection. The recommended 18 inch snow tire size for the 550i Sport is 245/40/18s. I recycled my snow tires that I had on my Infiniti M45 Sport which are one size taller (245/45/18) but so far no rubbing at all.

If I wanted max snow performance, I'd get Bridgestone Blizzaks.

I have Blizzak LM-25's on my stock, 19" M5 wheels, which I use for winter. Check out TireRack. Just be cautious on the 255 front. That won't work on the 550. You'll need a 245 for the front, at which point, you might as well do for the rear too.

+1. I would not go with staggered tires for a winter set. It's better to get 4 snows of the same sizes. 245s are the way to go with the 550 as C said -- 245/40/18s.

I am new to BMW and just purchased a 2007 550i. I live in CT and would like cold weather wheels and tires but have a truck if there is deep snow. My question is can anyone confirm if 17s really will fit this car and if so, which wheel style(s)? I like the 122 which is 17x8 and the 138 which is 17x7.5. And the 123 but only seem to be 18s. Thank you very much from a noob.

17" will fit. Just be sure about the right offsets. I'm running BBS 8,5 x 17 ET20 with 225/50 tires as my winter setup, but considering going bigger.

I have Pirelli SnowSports 210 or something like that on 17in wheels, same size all around. I drive in "urban" snow and actually wish I had more agressive winter tires although I haven't gotten stuck in the snow. My biggest issue is the ride height of the 550i sport. In the winter I have to drive through alleys and small side streets that aren't always plowed right away so I have to drive through 4-5in of the white stuff. Sometimes I need to disable traction control to power through.

Anyway, for the handful of times I need to drive in that weather, the setup is fine.

Thank you for your info. I am going to look for a set of 17" 138s for winter.

EXACTLY - you will have better traction in the snow/ice with that wheel plus more pothole protection due to the taller sidewall of the tire. Put a set of Dunlop M3 or 3Ds and you are set. I had the 138s with the Dunlop M3s and it was the second best snowtire combo I've ever owned (the first being a 16 or 15" wheel with Pirelli Ice tires back in 1996 - and no unfortunately they don't make that tire anymore!).
