I'm thinking of getting DMS to work their magic on my 520D next week. Any recent or past experiences with the 520D and tuning.
What do I look out for and what can I expect. Most important for me is that I don't loose the fuel economy at the cost of extra power (which I probably don't really need).

I would be very interested in your dms upgrade review if you get it done, as I fancy getting it done myself

Assume that four pot is no different to six pots, which all gives better mileage after DMS. Similar driving conditions of course!

Tell us more after You have done it.

So am I the first one then. Anyway I'm doing this on Monday afternoon will report back on results. DMS claim the following.

Power and torque to 208 BHP and 406 Nm. Fuel economy should improve by between 5% and 7%.

I can't stop wondering development of diesel engines. Thin when Sierra Cosworth came out -85 it had 2L petrol turbo and 204hp! MB200D had some 56hp

Now You can have 2L oil burner with 208hp!! OK, OK, stock 163hp!

Sounds great, significantly more power and slightly better fuel economy. A genuine question though - if DMS can do this, why don't BMW produce the engine like this originally? Is there a catch?

Have you done enough miles in your 520d to work out average MPG on various routes so you can honestly compare before and after?

Did you get the 25% discount offered to members of this forum and if so what is it costing? As I'm collecting my 520d in 4 weeks I'm very interested in how it turns out.

Look forward to your findings.

This has been discussed a great length.

BMW do upgrade their engines, but over time and when they need to, in other words when the competition does.
The 3.0d was 184bhp, then 204bhp then 218bhp and now it is what? 238bhp?

They also play it safe, their car couldbe bought by someone in Saudi Arabia on the monday where it is 50 degrees celcius and then driven to north Russia that week where it may be -50 degress, and at these temperature extremes a remap may not be the ideal solution.
Those that live in N. Europe etc. are lucky when it comes to remaps we can get alot for very little as we don't have these extremes.
Also a 160bhp car is in the lowest tax bracket for company car drivers and insurance isn't too bad so it appeals to them, if it were 208 bhp when all the same size engines from Audi and Mercedes etc. and tax was costing another ?60 a month they may go to the competition.

Loads of reasons, but I would say don't worry as these tuners play it safe as they don't want you screaming that they blew your car up!

I think this says it best!

Our South-African members also suffer power loose because of safety precautions (high altitude some parts and hot climate). Old 530d 218hp and new 231 are not totally same. There is mods also for the injection system.

Did DMS indicate what the new 0-60 time of the 520d would be after the remap?

I'll try and publish my opinions after the remap next week. I actually enquired about this before the e60 520D even existed. I was actually buying a e90 320D but when BMW lifted than engine and put it into the e60 I bought that instead.
Reading the review in the May 06 edition of BMW Car (UK) on the e90 320D made me rethink this again. Also I'm hoping by now DMS know more about how their remap is fairing in the market and don't actually use me to practise.
