After many months of searching, there is finally a supplier (www.bmw-chromteile.de) who will supply an easy fit chrome tail pipe cover for the 163ps E60 & E61 520d. From what I can gather, it is in fact the OEM Chrome tail pipe that is now supplied with the 177ps (LCI) 520d models, however I cannot confirm that it is OEM. Either way, it fits like a glove. Here are some facts:
Applicable models: 520d with the 163ps 2.0d engine, both E60 and E61
Supplier: www.bmw.chromteile.de -- online shop in many languages
Price: approx. EUR45, including tax and shipment within Germany
Fitting: It has clamps on the inside, which means you just have to slide it on -- with force ofcourse. You do not need to bolt or weld the parts. Its plug and play, but is clamped very tightly on to the original tail pipe.
I'm over the moon with the result and it now looks like the 5er models' chrome tail pipes, i.e. OEM and tasteful
Here are a whole host of before and after pictures, plus a few others.
Quality of the pics is not perfect, because these were taken with my camera phone. Still able to show off the shine though

Just 3 questions:
? Is this piece available at BMW directly ?
? Any anxiety that this piece could burn/melt because of the heat of the exhaust system
? Do you think you can remove this piece without damaging the original exhaust ?
Thanks for your feedback.

Answers to your questions:
1. To date no, you cannot order it from BMW. However on some of the German forums, members have identified what the part number of the 177ps OEM tail pipe is and have asked their dealers to order it. I thought ordering it on-line at bmw-chromteile.de was a lot more easier! (You will not they supply lots of OEM BMW equipment.)
2. Looking at what this supplier provides, I have simply assumed they have a product to match normal OEM levels. Furthermore, I believe this is the OEM 520d tail pipe!
3. It will leave scratches, but you could probably sand these away if necessary. I simply intend to give my car back with the chrome tail pipe on it -- its only a EUR45,- part afterall.
Hope that is of help. Best thing to do is contact www.bmw-chromteile.de directly. I received responses from them very quickly and found them very helpful.

Thank you all for the kind words.
The car is complete now in my eyes. With the m-sports pack, M166 19s and Carbon Black paint, it really needed a quality finish on the tail pipe to match the rest of the car. And this chrome tail pipe does just that ...
