I saw an Alessio wheel (star-5 in black) and I loved the styling straight away but it turned out to be a 4x4 wheel. They make it in 8x17" which fits my E60, they also have it in 5x120 bolt pattern. The two things that bother me are the et which is 42 (I believe that for the E60 it has go to be around 20) and the fact that it is a 4x4 wheel the implications of which I dont really know (heavier?, might not clear the brakes?). Any advice would be much appreciated.

I would talk to the manufacturer to find out if they have application data that can answer your questions. I know the wheel offsets vary slightly depending on the rim. For example I am changing from 18" rims that have a 20/32mm offset to 19" rims that have a 12/28mm offset, which I believe compensates for the wider rim width (+.5"). I have also seen that these rims look differently on an xi (i.e. they stick out farther) so I am not sure of the geometry of the xi.

I would agree with your concerns and start with the manufacturer, then talk to a good tire shop/wheel expert that maybe could answer some of your questions.
