I have a 2005 545i and I looking to upgrade to get some better performance. I have about $3000 to start with, but I don't know where to start. I am ok with the handling for now, I am looking for some more speed.

By more speed I assume you mean better acceleration

Lightweight wheels and non run flat tires

or

Dinan software, exhaust and cold air intake

I would start out with an exhaust like the Eisenmann Sport or Eisenmann Race.

Before you pick up an exhaust system, try to hear a few in person. Sound makes a huge difference in terms of daily driving enjoyment, so you want to make sure you get that aspect right.

K&N, RPI sccops, ECU tune/remap, exhaust and still money enough to spare for cosmetics looks.
