There's a nice video on YouTube on the 2010 hard drive-based iDrive interface, and it shows a completely different menu and screen structure than that on my 2009 DVD-based system, even though the controller buttons are the same. So, the question is can the 2009 iDrive system be updated to the 2010 screens and menus?

Yes. This forum has quite a few people now who have done exactly that. Just open any thread that has a title CIC (that's what the HDD system is called) retrofit. Most people update to it from older 2004-2007 CCCs (DVD based) but certainly, you can do it.
There is a thread in the DIY section, and an old Group Buy for the parts ($2000-$3000).
Hope that'll get your started on the reading. Feel free to ask more questions.
PS: It will just be $200 cheaper for you vs. others since you already have the new idrive controller. Other than that, you will have to switch everything out.
