Can you replace the A/C compressor clutch or do you have to replace the whole A/C compressor

My Ride: 2008 535i

If it's the same as the 535i (n54 motor) then you have to replace the whole compressor. Mine blew up last week and took the drive belt and all the tensioners/pulleys with it. $1500 later...

1500...Ouch. Any warning signs or anything I can do to prevent this from happening?
