have the dealer do a software update to enable your cd player to play mp3's...some say it's free..some will charge you..
once you've done that..you can purchase the ipod kit from member schulrog/aftermarketbulbshop.com:

http://www.aftermarketbulbsshop.com/BMW-iP...bmw-ipodint.htm

***scroll down and he provides a link to the SIB which should allow you to get your mp3 programmed free of charge, along with other install guides

***just state you want to get mp3 compatibility, the minute you mention iPod they will quote you the for an iPod retrofit and not an mp3 reprogram

his DIY on how to do install it (20 pages, but read thru as member schulrog gives info thruout the thread answering various questions):

and to the forum

glad to help, hope it works out for you....update your profile with your location when you get the chance, helps members answer q's sometimes...as in your case, perhaps a member local to you can recc a better dealer/service department...

***you can always pm member schulrog if you have any other q's, you will need 5+ posts or be a member for 10 days to get your pm feature going tho....

its not impossible, tell them you want the ability to have your CDC play MP3 CD's thats the upgrade that you need

some got it done for free, my dealer charged me $200 to do it. Once you have it enabled to read MP3's you can buy the kit for $250 or so and simply install it yourself, its easy, one big plug and two small screws and its done

at the most you should be looking to spend $500 which is a far cry from what they quoted you

btw i have a 2005 530i with no nav, sat radio, and there was a CDC in my glovebox and i enjoy my ipod touch in my car everyday
