My Ride: 2005 545i Sport, Premium, Logic 7, Jet Black, Black Leather, M-Aero Kit, 15% (very dark) Tint, Eichbach Lowering Springs, Red Brake Calipers, Radenergie R-10's, Michelin PilotSport2 in 245/35/20 and 285/30/20, Rolled Fenders, and a nifty Graco Baby Car Seat.
Next Up: Xenon fogs, Eisemann Exhaust, iPod Interface, Comfort Seats.
I bent a rim here in Atlanta, and mine are the 18 inch sport stock rims, style 124 I believe. It's extremely frustrating to be in a brand new $65,000 car and have to dump $400 on a new rim within a year. The smart thing to do I guess is to buy the wheel and tire insurance they offer when you buy your car.
For style reasons, whille not necessarily practical (because if I were practical I'd be in a Honda with bouncy 16 inch wheels) I am considering Beyern Mesh 19's, but will definitely be losing the run flats- I am convinced their stiffness contributes.
But yeah, I guess it's just part of the cost of ownership, unfortunately. That $500 wheel and tire insurance is looking better and better. If my wheel and tire retailer offers it, I'll jump at it- especially with upgraded rims.

i too live in boston, have the stock 18" tires with M aero package and wwas thinking of going with 19 or 20" tires. I don't use car in snow, so traction is not an issue. But I worry about ride. First, the runflats seem loud and harsh. Second, I assume larger tires will be worse. Any chance that 19 or 20" tires with non runflat will be both a better ride and less prone to trouble? Thanks.
