I went with 19"s, I do think the 20"s look better IMHO, BUT I had 20s on my benz and it caused a lot of extra "stress" on the car.
Not sure how to explain, but the benz creaked and groaned after adding the 20s (they were very light Brabus 1 pc wheels). Not too worried about potholes here in FL, but you may where you're at.
So I went with 19s to avoid some of the probs I had w/ the benz. I think the 19s look great, just not as great as 20s.
DO you have the Sport Pack? If so, I don't think u need to lower it. You should lower it if you don't have sport though.

You'll give up some ride quality with 20's. The road will feel a little harsher, a little bumpier. More so than with the 19's.
However, the e60 has got big wheel wells and the 20's will fill that space nicely.
If you're unsure about lowering the car, get the wheels and tires first. Then you can decide if the ride height is already to your liking. Some with the Sport Package say the car doesn't need lowering springs if you put 20 inch wheels.

staying with a 20" theme what is the widest tyre you can go with. I have seen 275 talke about on 19", does that mean a 285 is tooo wide.

Keep in mind that it is equally important that your wheels are designed for your car. You don't want someone selling you 20 or 19x10" wheels for the rear in the wrong offset or you may come into problems rubbing the fender no matter what tire size you get. This becomes an issue with wheels having a lot of "lip" in the rear. Also, you may experience increased vibration if the wheel is not designed to hubcentrically fit your car.

go for 20!! as long as you use 245 front and 275 rear you are fine. Guaranteed!. Even you can lower your car without rubbing. 20" looks great on E60. The rides diffrence is very small from my experience. I have 19" on my 3 series and I dont feel significant drop in ride qualities.
The benefit of having nice huge rims is greater than the small ride quality loss
