Hi guys,

I'm starting to think about getting a set of summer wheels, Ive read loads on the forum about 19's and 20's but dont seem to seen any feedback on what its like living with them.

Things like:-

Do you constantly think about pot holes and curbs?

Does the novelty ware thin when the ride suffers?

Are they tough enough to remain good looking through the riggors of daily driving?

Do the wide lip rims get bent?

Some food for thought, I would love some feedback, like the look of the wide lip, but cant help thinking they would be prone to denting from pot holes.

Thanks as always guys...Mick

Mick,

Not tried 20" but have got 19" and I would say the ride is about the same as the test car I originally drove with 17" runflats. Touch a kerb though and its game over. The lip on the tyres gives no protection whatsoever. 19" is a nice size wheel for the E60.

I am hard in gettin' the sources and go for sick 20" wheels, aftermarket lips are protecting the wheels, but BBS for BMW does not produce them, even if you have 18-20"s we drive a 60-110k car so have to be careful normally I hardly go into any potholes, and as those are in the city when you do not go faster than should, my 0.02s are they will not bend. The lips are more issuse when you park I guess, but me I still use the mirrors and usually I am far from the curbs never park to close. BTW had sat in 18" 20"s wheeled e60 a bit stiffer with ///M suspension, but mine is 'only' sport with Dynamic Drive and it will not be lowered,so comfort stays, look is awesome for a fast 5m car, and it must be lightweight, mine will be 14-16Kg/wheel.

I haven't gotten a set of 19"s or 20"s yet so can't answer.

You can always get large rims without any lip at all if you're too worried.

As a general rule, the larger the lip, the more susceptible it will be to bend....except a high end forged wheel. By design, a forged wheel is actually stronger with a certain minimum lip. I remember reading a brief explaination of this concept in this discussion about RAC Monolites for the M5.

(BTW, I believe the other 8000 ton forge in Japan they mention is owned by BBS. Take the BBS RGR and RS-GT for example. They are the only BBS wheels with a lip, and that's because they are forged.)
