My Ride: 2004 545i - 6 speed manual (July 04 build), silver-grey/black, sports package std equipment (18", active roll, active steering, adaptive headlights), premium sound, bluetooth enabled, folding rear seat, lumbar, 3m hood/bumper protective film, rear tint, euro reflectors.

I have heard back from one forum member that they had run this size tire in the rear with no rubbing/clearance issues.

This is the same size that is run on the M5.

I am thinking of going this route.

Has anybody else done it and had any clearance issues?
Any pics available?
Is there a cal number for the speedo like there is for mpg calculations?

Thoughts and recommendations welcome.

I'm curious to know too... I want to go this route... with #166 and 285s in the rear but i can wait... wait till YOU try it out and report back

heres a good calculator... the M5 19" wheels and tire combo will be off by 3mph on your speedo.

I will go with the 285's, it is just whether I go with 30's or 35's. I think you have to go with a 285 over a 275 for the 8.5/9.5 rims to avoid a reverse crown effect (the tires look too small for the rims).

The tire shop I work with (Americas Tire) will mount both and I can take a look. I will also take some pics. I think even if I go with the 35s, if I have a rub problem in the first 100 miles, they would swap them - checking on that though.

My rims are on order and will take a couple weeks to get (the backs have to come from Germany).

PM me your email address and I will forward you pics when I have them.

FYI: Here is another good tire calculator for comparing sizes

The standar rim size of a 545 in the rear is only 9" so 275 /35/18 is the recomeneded size. I have 9.5" in the rear and I fitted 285-30/19, IMHO the car looks a lot better and eats the bumps better.

here is a simple conversion
275-35-18 --> 649.70 mms or 25.58" Stock Diameter
285-35-18 --> 656.70 mms or 25.85" more than quarter of an inch taller
285-30-18 --> 628.20 mms or 24.73" too small

275-30-19 --> 647.60 mms or 25.50 Recommended BMW size
278-30-19 ->> 653.60 mms or 25.73 less of a quarter of an inch taller

The 530 and 525s all around are
245-35-19 --> 654.10 mms or 25.75"

so my rears now are as tall as my front ones and compliment to the large rear part of the E60..

just my 2cents.. lokk at my picture below and I have 10mm spacers and no rubbing

Your setup looks good - balanced with the right amount of gap. Basically from stock your fronts are the same diameter and the rears are .15 bigger, which I think the stock rear has too much gap. I also like what the 10mm spacers did in the rear.

Here is my question: Rims may vary, but running the 245's on a 8.5" rim - do you get any reverse crown effect (i.e. does the tire look too narrow for the rim)?

On some 166 rims posted on the forum, which where OER, it looked like a 245 on the 8.5" front did not have a good fit on the rim (the tire looked too narrow for the rim). I figured I would have to go to a 255 on the front in order to make sure the tire looks big enough for the rim. I like the tire to be slightly larger than the rim (width wise).

So, if I do that (255-35-19), it is about .39 diam bigger. One option for the back is what you did the 285-30-19 is about .15 diam bigger then stock. So my gap in the front will get smaller than stock and my gap in the rear will get smaller, but will still be more than the front - not the look I wanted. Also, the sidewall on the back will be ever so slight smaller than the front - again, not the look I wanted.

So, if I consider the 285-35-19 in the rear, it will significantly fill up the gap, and the wheel will have more sidewall than the front. It will look more like the M5, where the tire starts to disappear into the fender well.

I think my two options are:

245-35-19 front and 285-30-19 rear and risk the front tire looking too small for the 166 rim
see thread: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=17858 note side view of car. Or,
255-35-19 front and 285-35-19 rear and risk possible rubbing.

What is the offset of these rims. I liked what the 10mm spacers did on the back.

Appreciate your input.

I have 20/30/285 on the rear. No rubbing issues whatsoever. the gap still large.
