166 Style Rim on 2007 550i can i do it or cant i?????
I just ordered a 2007 550i loaded up i have the style 124 rims that comes with the sport package but i really want to upgrade to the style 166 rim that comes on the M5 is this possible? I have called many dealerships and noone can give me a straight answer, i have been told repeatedly by the dealerships that the 166 style rim is only for the M5 however i keep seeing the rim on a 545 or 550 on the internet. What i would like to know is if there will be any problem installing the factory 166 style wheel on the 550i, also i have ordered active steering as a package on the vehicle will it discalibrate or cause any malfunction with time or at high or low speed to the mechanism? will there be any rubbing? i do not want to invest the money on the wheels if it is going to cause any problems with the vehicle or if i will notice any uncommon vibration or irregularities when driving the vehicle. I have seen aftermarket high grade repilicas of the 166 style wheel on the 545i and 550i is this the only way of putting the wheel on the car is it for money purposes. If it is possible with the factory wheel then i will invest in the real thing no look a like. I really will thank anyone for any details on this process or anyone who has done it, and if i could get an answer. I do not have much understaning with the lug pattern and spacing mm size and all this stuff. One more concern would be the brand of tire and size of tire that i will have to put on the 166 style wheel so that there is no rubbing but optimum performance and any rot under the tire wich i have also read. thank you for any explanations!

There's lots of tyre advise on this forum... Personally, I'd stick with 245/35/19 and 275/30/19.

However, there is one other factor - Offset. This has been discussed a lot on this forum...
The 172's have ET18 (millimeters) Front on 8.5J (inches) rims and ET32 Rear on 9.5J rims.
The 166's (M5) have ET12 on 8.5J and ET28 on 9.5J rims.
So very close (6mm/4mm). This means the hubs will stick out slightly more than normal.

My Ride: 07 BMW 525i Premium Package, Xenon Lighting Package, manual Transmission. Titanium Grey, 20% Tint around the back, 70% V-Kool on front.
Planned mods: Style 71 wheels with Toyo Proxy 4 tires, Sachs suspension upgrade, upgraded stereo, and many more to come.
There are many people fitted with Style 166 on this forum, with no problems at all as long as you go with 245/35/19 up front and 275/30/19 on rear. People says 285/30/19 will fit also with no rubbing. I personally have a set of 19" BBS fitted with these kind of tires and no problem whatsoever. The ride is a little more noisy but people have say 19" non-runflat rides better than 18" runflat, so I think you should be ok.
Just make sure you transfer or buy new tire pressure sensors onto your wheels, then you are good to go.

Heck yes, you can easily run 166 wheels on your 550i.
Welcome aboard, glad you joined us.
See my sig below for the typical tire sizes on 166s. I might suggest wheel spacer rings to bring the rear wheels out a bit more flush with the panel. Otherwise they run fine. I also agree with what others have mentioned - fat 285s in back will work too and look better in terms of filling up the wheel well.
Good luck with the wait and show us some pics when you get it.

You need to break up your post. It hurts the eyes when the words are all jumbled together.
Now, onto your question. Go ahead and order the 166 wheels. We have a member, quad_m, here who will sell then to you for a great price. Don't ever buy anything from the dealership now that you've found this awesome board.
I have the 166s with active steering. No problems whatsoever. Also, I went ahead and lowered my car with H&R Sport springs and installed H&R 10mm spacers on the rear.
The correct and recommended BMW tire sizes for the 166s are 245/35/19 and 275/30/19. And, others are correct that 285s are not a problem, either. Kchan, you need to edit your post.
