hi all got big old trees cut yesterday and the saw dust covered my bmw e60 so last night here in Ireland we had mist and very damp weather so I took hose out and washed it off car but 2 day when started it and drove 500 metres it started chugging and yellow engine light only came on an hour later car is fine but light still on sorry for going on with long story is their any way turning light off with out going to indy or garage please help tanxs

 

Hook her to some diagnostics tool and read the codes,car throwed an error and was stored in dme.Read the code and start from there.

 

Yep pull the codes. If there are a bunch of old ones or you haven't check the codes stored on the dme before, clear them all and see what new ones pop up.

VANOS solenoid(s).

 

There are more messages you can get to with a BMW specific code reading program.

Perform an oil and filter change and check the oil filter cap according to item 2 under Service Procedures in this bulletin:
Tech Tip: BMW?s Power Reduction and Vanos Faults Are Stored In DME

Then remove and clean your VANOS solenoids. Use brake parts cleaner to clean them. Here is a post with pictures:

wudy this be caused by when I removed the oil cooler to do seal and than I sprayed engine oil degreecer on all the oil that spilt out and covered parts

 

oh I for got to say also idrive is saying I need to to up with 1 litrer oil

 

I doubt one liter low will cause this, but the solenoids purpose is to modulate oil pressure to the variable valve timing system -- so, I suppose it might push something over the edge that is already got an issue.

If you got containments in the oil, it could definitely cause the problem. What happens to these solenoids is they can get stuck and then not properly work the variable valve timing mechanism. So, they can get stuck with dirt, metal pieces or they can get gummed up due to insufficient oil changes. They can also just get old and need to be replaced. I replaced both of them in my wife's X5 recently.
