I am looking to buy used winter tires for the BMW E60 (yes, I realize it's barely summer LOL). I have a set of 16 inch BMW original aluminum wheels, I just need to purchase the winter tires (the rubber).

I believe 17's are the smallest rim you can use on a E60. I'm guessing that the OEM 16's you have didn't come off of an E60.

Surprisingly enough, in 2004 a certain model of the E60 came with 16 inch wheels/tires (the entry level model).

 

Wow! I did not realize that. It is probably the 528i.

 

Not sure about used but Tire Rack had a great deal for my car. 4 new 17 inch rims and 4 new Bridestone Blizzak tires for $1100.00 shipped. Mounted, balanced, everything....

Snow tires were FANTASTIC! On my RWD V8 i was in complete control and accelerated with full size AWD SUV's off the line. Stopping and turning were vastly improved. If you havent gotten snow's yet for your BMW, do yourself a favor and get them. Plus they add longevity to your regular rims and tires by taking them off for 3-4 months.

i have some new blizzaks. got some used wheels that came with fresh winter tires. ill get tire size if you are interested. im in MA.
they are for a 17" wheel. currently mounted on a style 19 wheel.

What width are you guys running on your snow tires?

My E60 535i is staying in my garage in Texas, but I'll soon be taking my e90 335i up to Colorado. I'm in the market for rims/tires for the snow as well, but haven't decided what size I'm going to opt for.

I was thinking 17x7 all around. Will I need spacers to run tires that thin on a sport package model? Also, 17's will clear the larger brakes of the sport package correct?
FWIW: I'll either be running Blizzaks or X-Ice 3's. I'm leaning towards the X-Ice because I need the most aggressive snow set-up possible for Colorado and Michelin has never let me down. They seem to make the best truck, SUV, performance, and race tires. I don't doubt they dominate in the world of snow too.

 

Don't be so concerned about wheel width for snow tires, be concerned about tire width. Narrower tires track better in snow.

The 335i comes OEM with 225/45R-17. Tire Rack lists the same size for snow tires. If you expect to encounter potholes or rough roads, you might go to a 225/50R-17, but it's the "225" (width) that is the most important. 17x7 rims should clear your brakes with no problem, you just need to be concerned about the offsets, which would be in the ET 30-35 range. Since you haven't purchased the rims yet, you're better off getting the proper offsets than using spacers.

 

The proper size for a winter tire is a -1 size, so for your 225-45-17, I would go for a 205-50-17. The Michelins and Blizzaks are fine, but I would go for NOKIANs - the WRG3s.
