Default Would You Guys Purchase This Warranty Extension if you were me?

Hello Gentlemen,

I am pulling the trigger on 2008 535xi Sports Wagon.

It is a very clean car, owned by a BMWCCA Member, and full maintenance records.

Car has had the HPFP, Battery, Water Pump, and Turbos recently replaced.

72,000 miles
Original Platinum CPO warranty which expires 8/2014 or 100,000

For $2,200: I have the option to extend the same warranty until 7/15/15 or 120,000

It seems expensive to pay over two grand for 1 year but with the mileage will be around 100,000 it may be advantageous. I drive about 10,000 miles/year.

Would you pay that for the extra year?

Thanks guys!
Evan

Well, if you have a spare cash just burning a hole maybe. I look at it as, if I were to get it, I would probably never use it and would be able to say it was a waste of money. If I didn't get it, I probably would wish that I had... $2200.00 doesn't sound that bad but I would be very clear on what exactly is covered in writing so that you don't find out later that it's not. Personally, I'm not a fan of these warranties. Your turbos are under warranty until 80k or around there, but if they were replace, there is now a two yr warranty on them from when this date. The HPFP is covered until 120k. Chance are the HPFP is ok now as they had problems earlier on with them. Just ran across a car the other day that had it replaces five times! It seems as once the car received the corrected one all was ok.

^ +1 on Tony's suggestion of fully understanding what is covered and what is not covered by that warranty.

If I were you, I'd put that $2200 in a separate bank account and use it for repairs that would've been covered by that warranty. If you didn't need to tap in to that account, at the end of one year, you will still have that money.

Open a savings account (ING, HSBC, whatever) and deposit that $2200 in there. Whenever you get an extra $20, $50, $whatever that you don't need for anything, put it in that car account. Use that savings account for car related repairs only.

That's what I do, it works well for me.

Good luck with the car.

For 10miles/year doesn't make much sense, assuming that the most expensive part will not be covered anyhow :-)

I wouldn't recommend extending at that price given anticipated mileage of 10k/yr and that the extension is for less than a full year.

It is Platinum coverage which I believe is bumper to bumper minus maintenance/wear and tear items items.

Details can be seen here:

Thanks for the continued input

I am the first to never buy a warranty and also say you'll never need it.

With that said, I can honestly say I am glad as hell I spent the extra for the CPO warranty on my car. It was hard spending the extra thousand upfront but it sure saved my rear.

The total repair bill to date has been north of 18K in parts and labor. These German cars are ridiculous when stuff goes boom, and the timing is priceless when it does let go. A small problem just in labor ran into 3K for some gasket on the oil pan. The really, really, I mean really expensive repair, was a new transmission, shift cluster, transmission ecu, and mechatronic unit.

My car now is pretty much brand new again, though getting there was not fun!

The best part is when I bought the car this repair record was flawless. It was owned by a little old lady and I have never seen a used car with such amazingly flawless paint @ 40K. You can never tell with these cars.

I also have an older 525, with 275K on the clock which never has had a big major problem. Some have problems, some will never have any problems.

Flip a coin? lol!

Good luck!

I would! i bought an 09 528i with 25,000 miles. I thought twice about getting the extended but i did anyways, good thing i did because right when my 50,000 mile warranty ran out my transmission went out. all i had to pay was $50 instead of $7300.
