sorry to hear that and thanks for sharing . too bad your car was stalled at that spot, otherwise you just tell your service advisor not sure what happened and the car just stalled .

Don't even worry about hyrdoplaning with the Dunlop 18s, at least while they are new.
I'm sure you don't mean that - any tire will hydroplane in heavy rain if you're going fast enough, and the Dunlops aren't the best rain tires for their price range.

I think he qualified the speed as 70 mph. Already done that with these Dunlops in a run through Mississippi in very heavy rains.

Consider yourself lucky.

I drove through standing water in my minivan and it stalled in the middle... Then me and my 2 friends pushed it out of it into a parking lot and let it stand for 2 days. I tried starting it and it didn't start. Then I had it towed to a workshop. When they first looked at it, they told me 99.9% of cars with this problem are junk and they can't be fixed... After about 5 days, they called me and said that they drained a lot of water and it has been fixed. Although it is now fixed, the engine sounds 'wierd' when it is idling.

Luckily my car was .1% that CAN be fixed..... and I thought american cars suck

I have always thought that as long as the water hazard was only a small length say 25 to 30 feet you were better off taking it at some speed rather than slowly idling through. The less time you spend in the water the better?

escuse my ignorance, will the same apply to snow?
Shouldn't be as much of a problem in snow. The front spoiler would act as a snow-plow so difficult for the snow to reach the intake. Even if it did, snow contains a lot of air. Maybe if it was really wet snow.

Also, this would be more of a problem with cars with sports package because they are lower.

Snow shouldn't be a problem, because BMW makes tests in snow. But they are not testing their cars in rivers...

it may just be a 545 problem, when we had all the flooding in Va last month i was out in it and had to get home that day police had blocked off every concivable road but i found one and with a mini van leading the way to see exactly the depth. I ventured on at one time water was almost upto the door seal oh sh_t i continued to say, i made it home in a couple of hours and the car has never missed a beat then or now. Now i consider myself lucky and next time will probably park it and drive the e34. I think the fact that the car underside is completely covered helped alot. Sorry about your loss though and hope the future is great for you and your car

I doubt that it was 4 inches deep of water. I bet it was more like 12 inches of water !
