I think 255 is way too wide for winter. I have 245 and wouldn't take any wider.
I think the best size you could go would be 225/50 R17.

Check TireRack for your winter tires in the 225/50 x 17 - shop thru the link in my signature for additional rebates. You'll probably find very good brand-name winter tires for only a few dollars more than a cheap NoName brand set that will compromise your car's safety, handling, and performance.

+1 on 255 being too wide.

I've put Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3s (225-50-17) on my old ASA3 wheels and like them a lot . Got them on eBay for $160 each. They seem to have much better dry handling than Dunlop Sports M3s I had before and so much quiter than stock summer Continentals that my car feels like aluxury car now.

I had Continental sport contacts on my car: 245 on the front and 275 on the rear.
they were nearly illegal by UK standards and then it started to snow and get icy.
I had some very scary moments and ordered some Dunlop ultra grip in the same sizes and the difference in night and day.
I'm sure the guys are right when they say get wheels that aren't so wide, but for me, even the crazy wide 275's have made a tremendous difference.
i didn't want to compromise the looks of my car for the next 5 months. i'm very happy with my purchases.
