I need to get a set of winter tires asap and can get a really good deal on some 215-55-17's right now. According to the tire size calculator these tires will be 1.5" taller then stock, when the speedo reads 60mph I'll be going 61.1mph.
I think that the thinner tire will cut through the snow better. What effect will the taller tire have on acceleration and milage? Will I have problems with it rubbing in the fenders or should I be good since they are 215's only?

I'm in the same boat as you ...
I think it'll be OK plus more meat to absorb bump and give more safety as w/ taller tire so the rim will less likely to get hit like from hard pack snow/ice ... but we may have less stability in higher speed since the tire is skinnier.
But I did the same on my M3 way back for snow tires ... drop one less width size and went w/ one higher profile up ... best way to cut thru snow.
Which brand you gonna go with?
