I realise its summer but wanting to get winter tires this year as this past winter driving in the snow was a nightmare on summer tires!!
My question for those with 19's and winter tires is, do they work as well as those who go down to 17 or 18?

What tire size for 19 would give the most grip? 245x35x19 all round?

Any help would be appreciated.

You're a bit early aren't you?!

I went from 245 18s all round to 245/275 19s, and I used to travel from Frankfurt to Gouda every week for about 3 years, including winter. I never had any real issues and if you are going for 245s all round, then that would be fine. Andy545 also runs a 245/275 winter set-up and he's based in the Netherlands.

The main issue IMHO, is that you have less rim protection with these larger wheels. That can be a bit of an issue in snow, where the curb is not so visible or there are more pot holes in the road. I lost traction close to a curb and clipped it with my rim, so can unforetunately speak from expereince It depends how much snow driving you think you are going to be doing. I rarely have to drive in the snow, so for those few days over the 3-4 months of winter wheel use, I would rather leave the car at home but the rest of the time have a great looking car whilst others are rolling around on 16s and 17s As I said, it never caused me problems when driving the Netherlands and that was on a 245/275 winter set-up.

If you will be using just one set of rims for the whole year, I would suggest running All-Season tires all year round rather than running Winter tires 365-days a year.
A few years ago when I used to own an Audi TT quattro, I discovered that my wife's RWD 3-series with all-season drives better and grips better in snow than my Quattro running summer tires.

Hi timestamp

For the winter the 17" 225/50's ideal.

Go for max 245/40 18"'s.

And non-RF's, of course.

+1 for the ideal 225/50 R17 size . I used to run on them.

However, last winter I moved up to 245/40 R18 (all 4 wheels) and I surely could feel a slight loss in grip when moving to a wider tyre. Not a big difference, but noticeable. I agree with xBMWx about the quite thin sidewall of a 19" tyre, that could be a problem.
