Two questions:

1. Does it matter what kind I buy? Ie. Can I just go to my local gas station and throw their stuff in there?
2. Is there any way when you wash your windshield to make it so the headlights are not washed?

Thanks

Why would you buy them when the dealer will replace them for free if you are in the US. I don't know where you are from. It doesn't say in your profile.

If you're referring to the wiper blades, I don't think you'll find anything that fits at the local gas station. The blades on the E60 are a newer, spring steel type that is most likely not stocked with the more traditional blades.

Okay, I get it now -- sorry!

You can use any fluid you want. Obviously you'll get what you pay for. Most of the blue gas station stuff is cheap and will do well in the winter (if you live in an area that sees ugly winter weather) since it won't freeze and since you use it much more often.

For the summer, if you want to be able to get rid of bugs, etc., you might need a booster product or buy better wash (either from BMW or somewhere else). Either way, I don't think you'll find anything that works better than a little elbow grease and a good window cleaner.

As far as the headlights, the car will only wash them if they're on (parking lights and above?) so if you really don't want them washed, you need to turn the lights off. If that's not possible, you'll find that the headlights get washed every few washes. Not sure of the actual logic behind how often...

I heard every 6 times cleaning your windwhield, you light washers will get cleaned.

I often go to autozone and grab anything off the shell. They seem to be doing the job.

I have no idea if my headlamp washers even work. I've never seen them functioning or any evidence of cleaning but the lense covers always seem clean so I assume they work. Why would you not want the headlights cleaned?

A good way to tell if they are working or not is to drive at night (obviously with the lights on) and use the washer. If you see that it gets a little darker in front of the car they are working. You will definately notice it at night.

They work great when someone is tailgaiting you also. The spray coming off of the headlights and around the car does wonders to annoy the person behind you (or so I've heard ).
