I have a six inch long crack on my windshield...should have it taken care of when it was a couple of inches but I'm too lazy. Any recommendations for windshield replacement in the SoCal (south OC) area? I did a search and the most recent threads are a year and a half old.

Also what pricing is fair? My insurance (Wawanesa) will only pay for the "lesser amount after the deductible" which is $1000 so probably better if I pay if myself. I called a few places and received quotes from $800 to $300. OEM at the dealer is around $1500.

Troy,

A point made by a body guy (who did a great job on my wife's BMW last year) was to make sure the windshield is a BMW part, whoever puts it in. His claim was that windshield quality varies widely by source, and BMW windshields are not your garden variety unit. You might want to check for lower cost sources for the OEM part and get an installer to put it in as a separate price.

I can't confirm his comments, but just wanted to add it as a note while you're looking.

Cheers

I just had my windshield replaced a few months ago, I have glass coverage thru geico. Call my local glass shop first that does all the work for my bmw dealership. Geico wanted to give me a safelight or something aftermarket windshield and said they cover up to 600 and nothing more. After 1 40 minute phone call with the lady from the glass company me and the insurance company they decided that they had to give me OEM glass, replace the rain sensor and all the trim ended up being close to a grand. Call your dealer, find out who installs windows for them and go toe to toe with the insurance company. You'll win just gotta play the game. I just kept saying what happens when my automatic wipers dont work right, whose replacing the window again??

Do you have a HUD?

E60's with HUD's need a special windshield.

The OEM HUD windshield on the E60 is STUPID expensive. But if you have a HUD, the OEM windshield is all there is. There is no "cheaper" alternative."

Either way, I'd try to push your insurance rep. towarads genuine BMW parts. There is NO reason for you to justify sub-par parts on a luxury vehicle.
