The saga is over. I took the information that Rudy provided to my service rep and the owner of the glass retailer. The glass retailer told me how the BMW rep had told him that there was no special windshield. I told him that the BMW rep did not know what he was talking about. I showed him the information and told him that I did not want the BMW service guys taking the car apart to adjust the HUD if it was the wrong windshield. I told him that I did not believe the windshield that was installed was the correct one and wanted them to contact the glass manufacturer with the info I presented and verify it had the wedge shaped liner between the glass.
They called me back that day and said they were going to order a new HUD windshield from BMW. The glass came in today and the idiots called me and said it was the same windshield that they had installed. You will not believe how stupid these people are. I had to probe to get to the real facts. After calling the BMW parts folks that ordered the window and getting the part number and then calling the glass guys back inquiring about the part number of the windshield they installed, it became apparent that he was referring to the fact that it "looked" just like the same windshield. I of course told him that there is no discernable difference in the look of the glass and told him to just replace it.
At lunch I dropped by and saw the HUD marking on the new windshield. Then I pulled back the window sill on windshield they installed, and not to my surprise there was no HUD marking.
Anyway, I got the new windshield and everything is perfect.
The cost of the wrong windshield was $800 and I did not claim it on my insurance. I do not know if the HUD windshield costs any more as they did not charge me any extra for the new one.
What a nightmare this has been...mainly just a huge waste of time making sure they got it right.
Life is good.

Glad to see you got things sorted out. Imagine what you'd have gone through if you'd have let them screw around with the HUD! It would have been a bigger nightmare, I'm sure!!

Speaking of windshield replacement with HUD, I just had my third windshield installed in 15 months. The first replacement was due to a stress crack and replaced for free, but the second was from flying debris. The dealer charged $486 for the windshield (i can live with that) and $570 for labor (6 hours at $95 an hour, ouch!). Any comparable experiences?

I don't understand why you don't go through your insurance company.I did on my 01 330ci with rain sensor and it cost me $100 because of the deductable for OEM windshield with rain sensor. If you claim it through your insurance your premium doesnot go up. What I also don't understand why so many guys get bent out of shape when the get a quote of $850-$950 for a OEM windshield to be replaced by a BMW dealer,to the best of my knowledge thats what they all charge, around this area. A windshield with rain sensor and HUD is $50 more than a windshield with just rain sensor.
