Maybe off topic, but can anyone tell me if the rain sensors are in the glass or just beneath it? It could be an issue when replacing the windshield...

I believe the rain sensor is part of the windshield and am assuming that will make it quite expensive. Has anyone had theirs replaced at the dealership? If so, what was the damage?

I have the same problem too! The previous owner of my car was in Arizona and must have been driving through sand storms on a regular basis! I did manage to take care of the headlights and fog lights too, but the windshield is still VERY pitted!
I feel you AZ has some of the worst roads because there is always construction 24/7

It's interesting that you should mention this. About a week ago, I took a VERY hard rock hit on my 3K mile LNIB 535. I thought for sure it cracked the windshield, but instead, it's a pit. Called the mobile windshield repair flunkies and they could do nothing for the pit. Oh well...
Happened to me about 6 mos. ago. I thought for sure it was going to crack, but like you said -- just a pit.

I have 2 year old E60 that has some serious pitting on the windshield and headlight covers. I am about to repair the headlight covers by sanding and polishing as I have done on other vehicles with great success, as they are plastic. My question is this - can anything similar be done to the windshield to polish or improve the pitting on it? It looks as if it's been driven in a sandstorm for about a thousand miles. Thanks.
This has a been a problem with the newer BMW's I have had, also.

The windscreen is very soft for safety reasons and the head-/foglight covers are plastic as you said.

Replacing is the only way, if you want mint.

Luckily the bumper is plastic and the front fenders and the hood are made of aluminum, so they wont
at least start to rust.

For this reason I do have a "BMW windshield insurance" that cost me some 40 bucks a year.

Any chance BMW would replace your badly pitted windshield if you car is still under warranty? Has anyone ever asked?

just some additonal info on windsheild pitting. be careful with spray waxes and tire shine, both can cause pitting in glass. i had a 95 ford bronco many years ago with the spare connected to the tailgate and i used to grease that sh!t up with armor all and tire shine. after some time i had pits in the rear glass deep enough to stick a needle in. obviously it couldnt be sand or rocks cause it was the rear glass. spoke to some people and they confirmed that certian tire shine and spray waxes can cause pitting.
