I've wanted a 545 for some time -- OK, actually I've wanted an M5 for some time but don't know if I can justify the wait, the increased price, and [my perception] that it won't be as reliable [at first]. BUT, I'm an avid skier. Currently I take my FWD Accord skiing in the mountains, applying chains when necessary.

Seeing the discussion of the 530xi's imminent arrival got me wondering if there will be a 545xi coming as well. Does anyone know? Then the natural follow up question: would I want one? Certinaly adding AWD increases weight and compromises handling. I'm thinking of going to my dealer and driving a regular 330 followed immeidatly by a 330xi to see how big of a compromise this is... I figure that since the 5 weighs more, the difference in handling will be less in the 5 than the 3. Has anyone else performed such an experiment?

Relatedly, how many have taken their 545's up skiing in the Winter? How good was the traction for mountain ski driving once equiped with winter wheels/tires. Did you throw on chains... were you able to do so without scratching-up or damaging the wheel well?

Most of us will take our SUV's into the snow for sking. Nobody want to mess up their new ride. Even one scratch is too many for me.

Sadly, I can really only justify owning 2 cars at a time... and I'm not giving up my 2001 Z3 3.0 when I upgrade by Accord to a 545... :|

Having enjoyed quattro on several Audi, I'm sure the XI would be nice.

4 wheel drive! Sod the snow, but it makes the car unstickable in the wet and dry.

Rumours say there will NOT be a 545xi.

Just get some snow tires.

Why would they bring a 545Xi when they have the X5's and X3's?

Just don't see the market - kinda like the 545 Touring in the US - very small, i.e financially not justifiable!

Cheers,

Well, my m3 with blizzaks in the winter was BETTER than the x5 with all seasons. I think the only thing four wheel drive is good fro is starting in the snow< direction and stopping is detremined by your tires.

Great.... I'll take this is a strong endorsment for the Blizzaks for my winter setup... and will proceed as planned. Next step search the forum for info on the factory ski rack vs. the after market thule & yakima...
