I have burned 2 CD's with MP3's (and not converted .wav files) and neither work.
Saying that, I've only tried them with the stock CD/DVD player that came with the NAV unit (that includes the Professional radio that supposedly plays MP3's) - I plan to try it out with the CD changer, but haven't gotten round to it yet!

From what I've been told and what I've read - the E60 will not under any circumstance play Mp3-files (unless you'd happen to run over the keyboard of a computer) until a software update supporting such playback, arrives.
Definition: mp3 file on a cd - a data file written to the cd as DATA, as opposed to mp3s written as AUDIO. The latter is supposed to work on the E39 and E60 (and most other cd players produced in the past 6-7 years), given a certain level of user proficiency.

I keep reading opinions on whether this actually works...
But I did read this article tonight...
"The 5 Series sedan comes in three models: 525i, 530i and 545i. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, a CD player with MP3 compatibility..."
I hope this is correct!

In the international BMW brochure it syas that the BMW professional radio includes an MP3 decoder. Look at page 4 here
http://e60.doit.wisc.edu/releases/brochure...0_Equipment.pdf
Professional radio is included in the business nav upgrade in the uk or you can purchase it as a seperate option.
I have not seen anything else anywhere from BMW about MP3 but people who have asked their dealers claim that this feature is not currently working and will be activated in a future software upgrade in Q1 04. I'll let you know if it works when I get my car in March, it's a January build.

Actually, what I recall reading - sorry, source forgotten! - is this:
the DVD/CD player in a Prof Radio/Nav system will (when?) be able to play mp3 in native format...
and better still. when it comes, that is...
you 'prime' the nav system regarding destination/criteria, etc. and say go - then you can remove the dvd and use the drive to play audio CD/CD-R/native mp3
- if the nav requires the DVD again it will ask for it.
I read this after having ordered the glovebox CD changer (but certainly would have still ordered it even with the info)

I have a 530i with the Logic7 system. I have tried several MP3 CD's and have not been able to make them work. I would love for this to work so that I could stop using my iPod through an FM modulator (Monster Cable ICarPlay, works better than my iTrip)
However, even if a future software update allows MP3's, it is still not possible to randomize songs on the whole CD changer. You can randomize a single disc, but the system won't pick songs randomly from the whole set. Maybe this is something that could get updated too. I've never had a CD changer that wouldn't randomize the whole stack.
BTW. I'm very happy with my e60, 530.

I asked BMW USA and here is their responce.
The BMW Assist and CPT 9000 are compatible features. Also, the CD player will play burnt CDs, but it is not designed to play MP3s. The navigation system is only designed to read the navigation map DVD. I hope you find this information useful.
Hope this answers your question.
