I always have been below 19 mpg during my commute (only city). I did get 30.1 once on the freeway taking it easy.

My 2007 530i is almost finish with break-in and I'm wondering will my mpg improve. I'm currently getting only 17-18 mpg combined San Francisco city roads and highway. The dealer told me mpg will gradually go up as the car ages..... FYI, I don't have a heavy right foot, but occasionally will step-on it once in a while.
I just came back from a trip to Fla. 2,780 miles. 29.6 mpg most hyway. From ST.Augustine to Tampa 70-85 mph 33.6 mpg. The best way to get good mileage on the open road no matter what speed your traveling is use your cruise control. I'm sure yours will improve, Good luck
cheers

At first i was seeing an average on 20.5, and thats with 60% city and 40% hgwy. After i put my 20 inch rims on it has fallen to 19.9. I tend to be easy on the gas when i drive, but i dont think that helps that much!!!

My wife averages 21.9 city and 28 highway, so I would hope that you could do the same. And trust me she races anybody that tries...

On road trips I always get 29 MPG. in the city is more around 22/21. In the bay area up and down hills that is no suprise. Try taking a drive down 280 to Cupertino or San Jose and see what you get.

Course all the liberal crap they throw into the gas supply might have something to do with it too.

I fillup with Shell V-Power 91 Octane and get 15-17 mpg, 80% driving in streets of San Francisco. It sucks!! But I'm sure mpg will improve if I mix it up with more highway driving. Got to get out of the city more often....

When I reset the trip computer I can see 28mpg on the autobahn. That is staying under 90mph during break-in period. I know have 10,700 miles on my 07 530i. I usually keep it @ 120-140 mph. I live in the middle of no wear, so the autobahn is traffic free. Everyone thinks he's/ she's a Schumacher on the backroads. Between back roads and highway I avearge 20.9. I have also noticed I can get better mileage on backroads manually shifting the steptronic. The steptronic will hold the RPM's high in drive mode, while climbing (4k rpm's sometimes). If I manually shift, I can put it in a higher gear, and still have descent torque. I tried this for about a week and saw my combined mpg go to 23.2 mpg.

I'm feeling fortunate as my 545 has returned just under 24 MPG for its' first two tankfuls of gasoline. It has been driven in a mix of highway and city, but traffic in Tulsa is not nearly as difficult as Dallas was. I think the higher gearing of the manual transmission may help..

My 2007 530i gets about 21-22 around town (I have about a 12 mile commute to the office). On the interstate, using cruise most of the time at about 70 mph, it has been about 30 mpg.

Just for contrast, my 325Cic convertible gets abou 16 around town, and maybe 25 on the highway. The new engines seem to be much better and better matched to the car.
