Thumbs up

Does it negatively impact the transmission when you shift with steptronic?

I am sure it will, but depends on your driving style really. eg Changing up and down the gear at wrong speed...etc

One of the advantages of the steptronic is that the transmission won't let you shift up or down if doing so would either over-rev or over-extend/lug the engine. The ZF boxes are very robust and the software takes user error out of the equation. In all honesty, I'd be surprised if extended use of manual shifting had that much of an impact on the overall life of the transmission. Provided the box was serviced per the car's on board service indicators I suspect you'd be fine to manual shift to your heart's content.

Not enough that it'll take any noticeable life out of the tranny I dont think.

It's a MANUAL transmission.....as all manual transmissions.....it is built to constantly be shifting......a better question might be since the trans pretty much invites downshifting....how well does the clutch take it......what is average life of SMG clutches.....I'd like to know that......

???? The topic is on the Steptronic tranny and not the SMG.
