Hi,

Been looking for wheels for the new BMW 530D. Seen some 135's and 172's (I think these are the UK model numbers) and I noticed that the 172's have wider wheels for the back. Of the other alloys, some have a split configuration and others don't.

I just wanted to know how much of a difference do wider rear wheels make ?

I would like to put alloys on, but I want the ride to be as comfortable as possible (am I dreaming or what).

Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ash.

Performance wise - wider wheels on a RWD car give you more grip
Cosmetically - wider wheels give you a meaner "stance"

Would wider wheels make for a more comfortable drive ?

I would be going from 16" Standard tyres to probabely 19" Alloys. I bought the car for comfort, So I would want to retain as much comfort as possible, as I've been told that Alloys with larger wheels make it more uncomfortable.

The width doesn't affect the comfort as much as the profile... If you're coming from 16's you'll notice the difference! Whatever you do avoid runflats if you're after comfort...

I would be willing to bet you are going to notice some loss of 'comfort' in going to 19" wheels from 16s. A good compromise might be the 18s of which there are a great selection of both single width and staggered. They allow a little more rubber between the road and tire providing a better cushion. They are also a bit more immune to damage from road hazards.

I have 17s and will make the move to 18s at some point. The decision between same size and staggered, I have yet to make.

I like the the staggered look- more sporty. The benefit of going the same size all-around is that you
can rotate the tires.

You would think that having wider wheels at the back would make it more comfortable, but I don't know . I definetly like the More sportier look.

But .... with all the miles I do, I need comfort.

I can not believe you COULD notice the difference in 'comfort'. All other things being equal between staggered and same size front and rear.

+1 staggered. a good number of members including myself have also put spacers in the rear to get the more staggered look as well if the offset was still a little high.
