I allways use it, but others never do so.
Some ppl call it parking brake, some emergency brake.
To me it is a parking brake and I allways use it when I park the car. That is the main purpose of it.

because in the owners manual it says nothing about using the parking brake when you are parked but shorely this can damage the gearbox?

The parking brake? No.
IF something damages the gearbox then it would more likely be the P only without parking brake, but this will also not damage the gearbox.

Sometimes you find that if you don't use the hand brake, after you park, when you shift back from P, you hear like a crank sound and you feel it too. In the long run, it could damage your gear box, so I recommend, when you want to park, after you come to a complete stop, move your gear to N then apply the hand brake, then put it into P. This will avoid the crank sound and will make your gear box last much longer. Also, it keeps the hand brake readily available when you need it. If you don't use the hand brake at all, after awhile you'll find that the hand brake doesn't work like its suppose too, usually it'll "fail".
