Off late, the car has been emitting white smoke after starting the engine. I have sent the car to the dealer twice and reported the white smoke being emitted but it is still there every morning even though the weather is fine and I do not think it has anything to do with the morning temperature. After the car is running for couple of minutes, the white smoke will go away.

Anybody having the same problem and what can be done to get rid of the white smoke which is a source of irritation and embarrasment too. Thanks

My Ride: 525i, Orient Blue, bought used with 22000 miles. Grey lether, sport package, BMW Assist, Cold Weather package. Xenons. NOT premium for some reason, I do like the metal finish vs. the wood, but do miss the garage opener.

I think that means there is a new Pope right? (sorry, couldn't resist)

Welcome Eug!

Is the car new and/or dont you drive very long distances. i have found some new BMW's and ones that are only driven short distances daily do that.

The cure is to take it for a nice long drive on the highway to clear out all the systems.

Otherwise it could be water vapour condensing in the cool morning air

White smoke also indicates water and oil mixing, normaly in a broken head gasket. That would normally not stop after while and it would also gave been diagnosed quite easily if you brought it in for service.

If I dont drive my Boxster for a couple days or weeks, there is severe white smoke until the engine is warmed up. The dealership says its normal, hope that might help.

I have the same thing... also told dealer, said could not duplicate.. I live in south florida, weather nice and warm most of the time.. start the car in the morning, take the kids to school... about 1/4 mile to the stop light.. at light, i look in rear view, and see the white smoke coming from exhaust..

what the heck do we do here? and is it a problem or normal?

Is it smoke or steam (water vapor)? All cars burn rich for the first several minutes on a cold start-up and this produces a lot of water vapor. Plus, until the exhaust system warms up, you will even see water drip off the tail pipe. It all depends on the ambient air temperature and the engine / exhaust system temperature. It's probably not a problem. A leaky/blown head gasket would cause more white smoke/steam to be produced after the engine warms up since the cooling system pressure will go up and force more coolant into the cylinder(s).
