Swaj, you like picking on the E60 don't you. LOL Rough idle no biggie. The N62TU for its displacement provides plenty of grunt, and hp and economy is near the top. Mercs need 1.5 more liters to top bimmers and lexus has just arrived with 4.6L that tops the bimmer motor in hp. No sure about the economy.

Not at all, I liked the E60 so much I bought two

One of them, however, did have a terribly rough idle - as have others who have posted here and on other theads. I know where you're coming from, believe me, but the thing is, these issues are a big deal if it's your car that's not working as it should. Glad you're happy with yours, but others either aren't always as lucky and/or will make fewer excuses for BMW. As I said, mine was largely fixed with new injectors at the instruction of the BMW factory rep.

Could it be direct-injection? It is my understanding MB and Lexus don't have direct-injection engines yet.

I don't think the N62TU is a DI engine, I think only the V12 and the 335/535 engine have DI in BMW's gas engine line up right now (and BMW's diesels are all DI). My guess is your idle issue can be fixed with software or, if a little more serious, a valve adjustment or injector replacement. Good luck, and keep us posted. If your dealer doesn't step up you can speak to the factory rep, generally the dealers will play ball if there is a service bulletin on the issue you are experiencing and I'm pretty sure there are a few TSB's out there related to idle issues. Trouble is these are incredibly advanced engines and there's a lot going on under the hood so issues like this do happen from time to time.

The rough idle seems common to all 550's. I haven't read many posts where this lead to major problems. I suspect many are just freaking a bit, wanting everything to be perfect.

While idling, the engine of my 2006 5501 slightly rocks. It does it after intervals (not continuously). I have taken it to the the dealer two times and the dealer says it is normal for this model? Any comments are welcomed.

Normal. Forget about it.

Nope. Excessive roughness on idle with an N62TU is not "normal", and it does those owners who have these problems a disservice to claim it is. The factory rep from BMWNA confirmed that there are known idle issues on some of these units and also its predecessor in the 545. In my case it was actually the BMWNA factory rep who came up with the fix (injector replacement) that had eluded the otherwise excellent efforts of my dealer. There are also TSB's confirming how to address idle issues on the 545/550 - so it appears that BMW also acknowledges the issue and has determined how to deal with it.

By any chance do you have the TSB numbers? My 545 is going in for a second attempt to diagnose my idle issues on Wednesday and any information to speed the process along would be helpful.

I don't, but one of our members (Cobradav) created an excellent thread with lists of the TSB's and summaries of the content. if you can find that it's an excellent resource. Good luck with the diagnosis!

Edit - here you go, I think this is the thread: http://forums.e60.net/index.php?showtopic=19188&hl=

edit2 - try these, there may be other more recent examples too:

Engine System 11 02 05 January-06 E60/E63 N62 - Rough Idle, Misfire faults after cold start (Supercedes May 05)
Engine System 11 07 06 October-06 All w/N62 Engine N62 Engine - Rough Idle at Operating Temperature

Don't think the 550i v8 is DI. Not sure about MB but lexus uses DI for their engines. Could this rough idle be caused by the grade of fuel used? I am sure you guys must be using the top grade for your 550i. I noticed that there is a fair bit of vibration on my steering (523i) while idling which I think is quite typical BMW (not worried) but after I have switched to shell v-power I felt that the steering vibration is a lot less.

I spoke with my SA regarding the rough idling on my 04 545 and he it was normal but after the reading the SIB it appears to be a known problem with the E60s.
