While idling, the engine of my 2006 5501 slightly rocks. It does it after intervals (not continuously). I have taken it to the the dealer two times and the dealer says it is normal for this model? Any comments are welcomed.

If your issues are similar to the rough idle on my 07 550, it's not normal. After trying software updates and adjusting valve clearances, the BMWNA factory rep agreed the problem required attention and BMW authorized replacement of the injectors. The problem didn't quite go away, but the injector replacement made things much, much better. FWIW The issues I had were more noticeable when the engine was cold or during warm up but it could happen with a warm engine too. One other thing to check - my idle issue (and the rocking issue as you describe) were more prevalent when the AC was on. Try turning AC off when you notice it and see if it improves - the AC system may also be contributing to the problem.

I see it's your first post, so welcome to the forum- good luck with the idle issue and keep us posted!

My 06 does the same. You get used to it, but importantly its silky smooth underway. Heck, its there to remind you that the E60 has V8 with some grunt.

Other manufacturers (Mercedes and Lexus) offer V8 engines with more grunt than the N62TU in the 550 - yet neither feels the need to build in a rough idle to remind you that it's a V8.

Thanks. This is my first post in this forum. I will observe without AC and let you know the outcome.

My 545 was rough at times too. Only the sixes are very smooth.

+1. The sixes are silky smooth. My X-5 4.8is also rocks sometimes. A little is ok but if it gets irritating then you should have the dealer look at it.

Just put my 2006 550 in the shop with a rough idle and engine light problem that came out of nowhere. It was much worse than just a rough idle though, it was if the timing went out or the fuel injection was clogged, also was rough at speed, so I had it towed in. Prior to this it always idled smoothly. Anyone else with this issue?

My '07 550i engine does not rock or exhibit excessive rough idle. It's not as smooth as my Lexus (which was so quiet I didn't know it was on) was but certainly not rough enough for me to think there's anything wrong. The only time I get a somewhat rough idle is when I haven't driven the car for a few days. It starts up rough but then smooths out after the engine reaches temperature and is smooth thereafter.

Swaj, you like picking on the E60 don't you. LOL Rough idle no biggie. The N62TU for its displacement provides plenty of grunt, and hp and economy is near the top. Mercs need 1.5 more liters to top bimmers and lexus has just arrived with 4.6L that tops the bimmer motor in hp. No sure about the economy.
