Hi, new to the board, just got a nice 2005 545 with Step. I noticed that there is no temp guage, just the disapearing lines on the tach. And no oil pressure guage. Am I not looking in the right place? I never have had a car without these!

Just sold my 996, I love the 545!!! :)

Regards,

Brad

C'est la vie!!!!

You don't need those things now. Your i-drive screen will tell you when its experiencing problems.

There'll always be a first time and it does take sometime getting used to, I am forgeting about the temp gauge in my E39 as we speak.

Well then, how long does it take to get to "normal" operating temp before you can jump on it? This is the challenge. I would assume that a few miles of light driving like in any other car would do the trick and get things warmed up before sprited driving should occur?

That's exactly what the "redline" LEDs on the tachometer that recede as the engine warms up are for.

Those disappearing white line on the tech are indicators, you should not go past those white lines when they are there.

Hey are those lines programmed into the ECU where if I try to rev that high when the car is cold it'll just bounce off them or am I still free to rev to the "real" redline?

Nope I never tied... I aint trying it on my car! HAHAHA amybe I'll try it in a loaner car next time. :wow:

No they don't bounce off you can rev it to the real redline I've try it....

j/k I didn't try anything stupid like that on my car, I thought I got you for a moment

Seriously though try it next time on a loaner if you have a chance.

I can't imagine pulling out of my garage at 5 am on a cold morning, shifting into drive and motoring off right up to one of those "white" lines around 5K rpm!!!! Yikes, not my idea of engine longevity!!

For what it's worth, the M5 has a temperature gauge instead of the instantaneous fuel economy needle. Just another reason to buy an M5....

So you do or dont know...

I thought I remember reading it doesnt bounce off that and will go all the way to the "real" redline... but not sure...

Now I want a loaner hahahahahha

realtyman 11-09-2005 01:35 PM

I can assure you you won't bounce off of them. They are a reminder not a rev limiter.

HA! I have a family, it's just that their legs are getting too long for the back of a 996...

HA I got you, I don't know I might never know coz I will never be able to try on a loaner. Or Demo for that matter because is not too cold here and those white line disappear real fast. But I am pretty sure it wouldn't bounce off.

Is that an oil temperature gauge, pointless to put a water temperature gauge in there where oil temp is your concern if you do hard driving.

Really? MAN! I dont want this useless MPG guage! I hate seeing the needle all the way to the right all the time! I rather not see it.

That gauge helps you save fuel, you see the needle going right than you ease off on your foot hopefully it will bounce back to the left
