My car is out of warranty so I wanna do an oil n filter change myself...Castle BMW in York UK want ?220.00.
I bought a Mahle filter form ebay...?9.99 and Mobil 1 oil fully synthetic 8 litres 5w30 (LL04 BMW spec according to the label).....?74.00.

I have a few questions

1) Where is the oil filter housing....any pics? Do I need a ramp/jack to get to it? I believe you do on the M5...but not sure on my 2005 M57 engine 525d.
2) Is Mahle filter any good? What is the BMW OEM filter?
3) Halfords do the same grade oil 10 litres fully synthetic 5w30 for ?70.00....any experience with this?
3) Should I drain the sump or use one of those convenient vacuum pumps and hose out the oil through the dip stick? Will I get all the oil out (8.3 litres I believe)?
4) Should I use an engine oil flush proir to drainage?

Thanks guys

Kaz

I am planning to do this soon also.

1. The oil filer from the front looking to towards the back on the right hand side, it is a metal housing with a plastic top that you need to unscrew.
2. I have used Mahle before, i would double check the part number to make sure you have the right one. If so should be ok.
3. I wouldnt used halfords own make in my car.
3b. I would drain from the sump for the first time to ensure any gunge of car comes out.
4. No I wouldnt use a flush.

Also, i you have 8 litres of new oil you need another .3 litres. Warm up the car by taking a short drive before draining, this'll thin out the oil for draining. Obviously if the engine is too hot then let it cool a bit before working on it, ensure that you replace the crush washer on the sump drain plaug and dont over tighten. Also when putting in the new oil closely monitor the level from the dip stick then check it again after a couple of days. DONT OVER FILL.

Good luck.

Thanks Bob, I just bought the extra 1 litre to cover the 0.3 litres that I will need. How often do you change your oil? BMW guys say 20 000 mile. That seems too long. I thought every 10 000 would be sufficient. Thanks for the advice.
