Thanks for the replies thus far...

Do you know WHY an extended warranty would be any less $$$ if I purchase it before the CPO runs out? That makes no sense to me...

Seems like the warranty companies would want to know the year and the miles on the vehicle to determine how much the policy would cost.

It has something to do with a car out of warranty perhaps has NOT been maintained as well as a fully warranted one! So in essence, they don't want to take the risk on a car the MAY need expensive repairs right after the warranty takes effect, at least if it were still under warranty, most any repair would have already been taken care of!

These are all good points from our members. And Im in a similar predicament with my '07 530i. I've only got 50K miles, considering keeping her longer and contemplating an extended warranty. My question is, how good is an extented warranty outsid of BMW CPO coverage and obviously, how much would I expect to dish out for it?

I don't believe in extended warranties. Most often you run out of time rather than miles and you lose the benefit of the warranty. I do agree that it's less expensive to fix a car than buy a new one, so here's my solution: instead of paying $3000+ for a warranty and hoping the company doesn't go out of business, set aside some money every month and create your own warranty. Even just $100/month will cover $2400/year in repairs. If you don't use it, hey it's your money to keep. Just MHO.

The factory warranty for my 2008 535XiT (currently 40K miles) runs out Feb 2012. I plan on keeping the car for another 4-5 years - so I've been looking into 3rd party extended warranties to give me another 4-5 years and a total of 100K miles. I've done research, read the forums, talked to my BMW service deptartment, got quotes from a number of 3rd party companies, talked to a few of them about labor rates and replacement parts (OEM vs non OEM).

For me (not everyone...) the best option is the Route 66 "Easy Street" 5 yr/100K warranty for $2400. This is the only program they will sell for BMW's. Base price $1550, $600 surcharge for BMW 1/3/5 series, a bit extra for turbo and all wheel drive. Route 66 only sells through credit unions, so I joined a local one in NJ called Affinity with a $50 deposit. Very straightforward, no dealer finance bulls***. I'm going to wait until Dec to pull the plug, but will do it before the factory warranty is gone. For similar warranties, I got quotes for alomost $5K from BMW and as high as $7K.

I have not seen any warranties that cover over 100K miles - but did not look very hard since it was not something I needed.

Hope this helps!

BTW - I don't understand how "$100/month will cover $2400/year in repairs"? Is my calculator broke?

The last 525 I bought new and drove to 263K , outside of a Radiator at 180K , nothing ever broke. Do Normal maintainence on these and they will run forever. Keep it , it's cheaper than buying again
