We have a 2007 525xi that has been a great car so far. We purchased it used (CPO) with 30K miles on it almost 2 years ago. It currently has 70K on it, and the CPO warranty should expire in Feb of 2013 or slightly sooner if we hit 100K before then.

My question is this...

When should we be pulling the plug on this car and looking for a replacement? We like the vehicle, but I'm afraid of a major-repair once the CPO expires. Should I 1)Dump it just before 100K and consider myself smart, or 2) Buy an extended warranty and keep on trucking, or 3) just drive the thing and consider any repairs much cheaper than a newer car purchase?

Obviously we'll hear some differing opinions on this, but I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

Thanks!

If you like it, keep it. Obviously keeping upon maintenance will help minimize risk of major repairs. Good luck with your decision!

I have an 07' 530i (69K miles) with CPO that'll run out in Feb 2013 as well. Been doing preventative maintenance and will to make a decision right before the CPO runs out. Hopefully nothing major happens before then to change my decision - knock on wood.

Most of the time, it's cheaper to repair than replace. Remember new car price, taxes, dealer fees, time spent, registration... If you like it, keep driving it.

I have 2004 525i, I bought it in 2006 with around 50k miles. it didnt have warranty and did not purchase one.
since 2006 I havnt had any major problem. I only changed the starter then I found out that I just needed to change the battery not the starter. the mechanical was a$$hole. plus I had to change brake pads, rotors and tires which is something normal.

I would say keep the car, only sell it if ur upgrading to better car

I have an 05 530i with 98000 miles on the ticker. I have had it since 46000 miles and have not had one major issue with it. No warranty for a while now and I have only had to change the starter which the dealer gave me half off on the price. It is more expensive to replace the vehicle than it is to keep it. Normal wear and tear is expected on any vehicle and most of the time the dealer will work on the vehicle under "GOOD WILL" if that is the way you choose to go after the warranty is up. Just take care of it and it take care of you.

I think about this all the time.. I have an 2006 M5 with 23K miles on it, and have contemplated trading in or selling to "downgrade" for a 911 Turbo...

I just dont want to take the depreciation hit.. since the new F10 is out, M5's dropped 5-10K...

Should you decide to keep it and get an aftermarket warranty, be SURE to purchase the warranty BEFORE the old one expires or it becomes MUCH more expensive! Also let me know with a PM if you want to price out an aftermarket warranty, as I have a guy at Mercury Insurance who will take care of you!
