You should NEVER downshift into 1st gear. It is not the proper use of the gear. All other gears can be used to slow the car down EXCEPT for 1st gear. Why would one do this anyway? It looks and sounds unbelievably stupid from the outside of the car.
why is that? when ur at 20mph and need the extra power, downshifting to 1st gets u going a lot better. I dont use 1st to engine brake. Only to get more power. Double clutching will make it easy.

The DSC really doesn;t help except in the rain and when u lose control. It gives me about a 2 to 3 second lag. It feels like a lifetime when the other car is jumping ahead already. U see, I have to slip the clutch to avoid DSC going on. With DSC off, traction is still on, double clutch, rev match, sdrop the clutch, smash the throttle and tires chirp then ur off. I rarely do it anyway. It's neck breaking! ![Laughing](https://5series.net/forums/images/smilies/imported/laughing.gif)

That whine isn't your engine - its the gearbox.
Personally I don't do this. As long as it feels smooth and you don't get any grinds, clunks or other nasty noises it's probably ok. On most cars when you do this you really have to force the gear lever into 1st hard - even when rev matching and it just doesn't feel natural.. For this reason I never do it (except if at a track - but the E60 will probably never see that).
