Looking to place an ED order for 550i, targeting April 2007 pickup. Since the updated 5'er starts production in March, then can I place an order now for the updated 550? I guess I can place a call to my dealer tomorrow but thought you all might know...

Targeting April 1) wanted to wait for the updated 550 w\Msport 2) qualify for my $1000 BMWCCA rebate after April 5th

Depends on your dealer. But, if you want the Sport shifter with paddles, better wait. That won't be available until Summer 2007. If you want the manual or standard automatic, go for it, and post pictures!

Hmm... I'm normally a manual guy, was considering the SMG for a change on the 550i.... Depends on delivery I guess and pricing. Think there's any chance the $1300 GG tax goes away for the manual? Wonder if it still exists for the "sport shifter"? If it goes away with the sport shifter it woudl be worth waiting for I guess.

Thanks for the info

SMG is done. I dont think the gas guzzler tax will be on the new sport automatic transmission. There will also be the same changes on the 6 series in the fall.

Back in 2005, I ordered my 2006 at the beginning of March 05. The dealer was able to "hijack" one of their existing orders - the car was in my hands just as I ordered it on April 16th. I'd start making calls, but chances are you won't be able to submit one until mid to late February in the US.

It might be worth considering that these new automatics are relatively untested technology. BMW has had its fair share of difficulty with geewhiz transmission technology in the last few years. If you are a manual guy, get a manual. I love having mine.

I'm waiting to see if the GG tax applies to both the manual and teh sport auto, call my dealer to see what's up tomorrow. That will probably make my decision for me
